2019/2020 Green Island Park Tennis/Pickleball Complex Project
Coulee Region Tennis Association is a local nonprofit organization promoting adult and youth tennis in La Crosse, Wisconsin and surrounding communities committed to supporting the La Crosse Green Island Park Tennis/Pickleball Project partnering with the City of La Crosse and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by community fundraising from individuals, families, and businesses.
The Green Island Tennis/Pickleball Complex Project involves Phase 1: constructing 10 new lighted outdoor tennis courts with 4 lighted outdoor designated pickleball courts and Phase 2: construction of 6 new indoor tennis courts in an air supported year round bubble next to, with access to, the current ice arena building at Green Island Park off 7th South Street in La Crosse. This project would make Green Island Park a great sports complex along with the ice arena’s hockey, figure skating, and curling activities putting La Crosse and area on the map for an excellent resource. Project estimated total cost is 3.5 million dollars with Phase 1 - 1.3 million and Phase 2 - 2.2 million. Phase 1–bids 2019/finish 2020; Phase 2– start dependent on funding.
La Crosse Green Island Park Tennis/Pickleball Complex Project
The Green Island Park Tennis/Pickleball Complex Project would benefit our Coulee Region adults and youth for a place to play tennis with friends and family expanding the season to all year when many are driving to Rochester, Winona, Eau Claire, and Madison to play during the winter season. Having these tennis courts will help keep adults and youth active now and for many years to come as a lifetime sport. The lighted tennis courts at La Crosse Bluffview (2), Copeland (4), and Weigent (2) Parks were resurfaced recently allowing safe play with no cracks and put to good use. Thank you to the La Crosse Parks Recreation & Forestry Department, La Crosse Parks Board, and La Crosse Common Council for approving and completing those projects. These are excellent neighborhood tennis courts for us to use plus those at Forest Hills. Many tennis courts in La Crosse have been removed due to other projects – Erickson Park (3), Trane Park (2), and 7th St (2) plus UW-L’s (16.)
A tennis complex that is planned for the La Crosse Green Island Park site would allow hosting city, school (middle to university level), and United States Tennis Association (USTA) tennis tournaments bringing in revenues for the Parks Department and for city businesses in lodging food, gas, and shopping. Our adult recreational tennis league called La Crosse Team Tennis Association (LTTA) with a history of over 30 years in La Crosse now has grown to 168 team players with over 100 subs of area community tennis players from novice to advanced tennis skills plus large social groups could all play at this site. Area schools, USTA men/women/mixed doubles adult leagues, USTA Junior Team Tennis Program, and Parks & Recreation summer adult/youth tennis lessons could all use this site as well.
